March 31, 2012

This post is for all of our fellow creators, writers (both story & song) and anyone that is looking for a little exercise in getting the creative juices flowing. Cause let’s be honest…we all at times have a little bit of writer’s block or writer’s barricade or writer’s great wall of China for peet’s sake–that’s what it feels like sometimes.

One time we were at a song-writing workshop where a well-known songwriter was talking about his experiences, his go-to things while songwriting and he shared something that has stuck with us. At first it might sound silly but it does get the creative juices going if there seems to be a blockage of some sort.

So, if you are feeling stuck, try this exercise. All you need is:

  • a piece of paper
  • a pen or pencil
  • a timer
  • a book or a friend

Get yourself set up to write. Set the timer for 7 minutes. Find a book or ask a friend for ANY word (or if you don’t have a friend around, take any random book, open it and put your finger down and whatever word your finger lands on…go with it). Then whatever word you get, write about it for 7 minutes. It doesn’t have to make sense, it doesn’t have to rhyme…just write about the word for 7 minutes. Write, write, write.

This sounds easy…and it might seem like a silly exercise but it’s a great one! In the workshop he had us all do this and the word was “dust.” After it was over, to demonstrate his point that everyone will think of something different he had some people share what they wrote. All of the different things were amazing…someone wrote about the dust on library books, someone wrote about their little league memories of dust rising over them as they slid onto home plate, someone wrote about the dust particles in the room… It was so cool. Everyone had a different take on the word “dust.”

Anyway–writing is definitely a practice and this can be a good way to start practicing writing. Whatever you write be proud of it. Don’t think it’s stupid. Don’t think it’s insignificant. Don’t put boundaries on your writing. Just write. Write. Write.

Cool? Cool. Now go write 🙂

Boredom, Running and Scenic Drives

March 30, 2012

Boredom at its finest backstage.

Okay…maybe THIS is boredom at its finest backstage.

Boredom also leads to sticking tiny silver hearts on our cheeks. Pretty sure you can only see Lesley’s. #picturefail

Y’all have been asking for pics of the birthday girl on her birthday…here ya go!

A little karaoke action in Denver for Jill’s bday.

Birthday hats = serious party time.

Gorgeous drive to Seattle!

Seriously unreal.

Still driving to Seattle…

An afternoon in San Francisco!!!

OO-AH run club run across the Golden Gate bridge…AND back. (pic taken by kate while running…notice finger in bottom left hand corner!)

That’s kate running…

After a fun day of running and wandering around downtown SF, we had fabulous food at the Crab House…and a delicious MOJITO! Yummy.

Jason was all bibb-ed and ready to go.

We saw the sea lions just chillin’ on the pier.

Finished off the night with ice cream….

We just got to celebrate our dear friend & bandmate Einar’s birthday…HOORAY!

Driving to Bakersfield we saw these crazy orange flowers…

After the Bakersfield show we met a new friend TeriAnn & she gave us these adorable purses that she MADE HERSELF. Along with a super sweet handwritten note inside. (Jill’s purse isn’t pictured but it is equally adorable!) We love them & cannot wait to use them.

So there you have it…those are some pics from the last week or so…

Can’t believe it is almost April….wowza.

Spare Change

March 27, 2012

So being out on the road we always come across situations that we don’t normally come across when we are home. One thing we’ve noticed especially lately is that almost every time we leave the hotel we are seeing/experiencing a lot of folks who are living on the streets.

People asking for a dollar. People asking for spare change.

It’s something we’ve talked about quite a bit…when someone asks for money we want to help. We are very fortunate to have jobs, places to live, etc. and it is easy to grab the change in your pocket or a couple bucks, hand it over and walk away. At the same time, you never know what that money is actually being used for and you don’t know if you are helping or not. So we’ve gotten into the habit of offering food in place of money.

We had a funny encounter today…we walked passed a gentlemen who had a sign that in big, bold writing said “WEED, SEX” and something else….he was sporting a giant hat that had marijuana leaves on it…he was quite a character. As we walked past he looked right at us, held up his sign and said, “Anyone wanna help me get SH!T-faced?” He said it loud and proud…we laughed…and continued walking…ha…at least he was being honest.’s not easy to know what to say/do sometimes. What do you do when you encounter people asking you for money?

30 Things

March 19, 2012

This is Jill…today I turned 30. YIKES! Actually, I’m excited. I’ve heard that your 30’s are better than your 20’s so I guess I’ll find out if that’s true!

Here are a few things I’ve learned over my 30 years…also they are things I want to remember as I continue on in this crazy world. In no particular order:
1. When things are ridiculous, laugh.

2. You are who you surround yourself with.

3. I always feel better after a workout. But that doesn’t always motivate me to actually go do it.

4. I really have never used anything I learned in geometry/trigonometry in real life. Ever. So when I yelled at my math teachers in high school and said it was useless, I was right. I feel satisfaction in knowing that. 🙂

5. Africa is magical.

6. Hearts can be mended.

7. People will always let me down even if they have every intention not to. God will never let me down even if I have every expectation that He will.

8. Forgiveness is hard. Forgiveness is necessary and life-giving. Usually the necessary, life-giving things are hard.

9. Being around kids brings joy. It keeps you feeling young too.

10. The ocean is my happy place.

11. I’m a major introvert. That’s okay.

12. When all else fails, find some chocolate.

13. I have a LOT to learn.

14. Seasons. They exist. Remember and accept that when it’s time for a new season.
“There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens.” Ecclesiastes 3:1

15. Most people are driven by insecurity. Try not to be one of those people. Learn to recognize those people and don’t let them get to you.

16. Happiness is a choice.

17. I’d like to think I’m more creative than this, but I could wear jeans, a black hoodie and flip-flops or converse every day of my life and be content. Heck, I pretty much do that. Who am I kidding?

18. The Sound of Music never goes out of style. It was my favorite movie as a child and it still is now.

19. Family is the most important. Your real family and the family you choose. Treat them well.

20. Don’t take yourself too seriously.

21. Trust your instincts. They are usually right.

22. Write notes to people. I learned that from my mom.

23. Be generous. I learned that from my Dad.

24. Pray. Talk with God. Listen to God. Communicate with Him however it is that you communicate. I learned that from both of my parents.

25. Don’t be easily offended. (This is hard for me.)

26. Appreciate other people. Don’t just put up with them or be indifferent. Learn to genuinely appreciate them.

27. Time FLIES. Be here now. Enjoy the moments.

28. Drink a lot of water.

29. Have a go-to karaoke song and own it.

30. Always be thankful.

Thank you for all of your birthday messages, tweets, etc. I had the best birthday! Here’s to my 30’s! 🙂

JillandKate’s New Song on March 17th, 2012-“ONE DAY”

March 17, 2012

I see you
You don’t look the same
I hear you
But your voice has changed
I wanted to keep you safe
But you’re stubborn and strong
Think you found what you want
And you’ll never change

One day you might ask me why
I can’t tell you how I’ve tried
To keep you from running away but you turned your back on me
One day I might tell you why
Why I couldn’t stand beside you
Watch you take your own damn life

I’m sorry this is not enough
I’m broken by what you call love
You wanted to keep me close
When it was convenient for you
To have someone to use
So you weren’t alone

Checking In…

March 16, 2012

It’s been a little while since we’ve blogged…sorry!

Here’s what’s been going on in j&k world…in no particular order:

SPRING!!!! The trees were blossoming in Springfield, MO and the weather was amazing. Love it.

Our AWESOME friends sent us a giant cookie cake and a huge basket of cookies, cake pops and goodies to our dressing room. It was one of the best days ever. Seriously, a giant cookie cake can really make any day great…Not to mention having the greatest friends around.

Jill and Miles were cracking themselves up by putting chip clips on their fingers. Lots of time to kill on the bus. Obviously Miles was extremely amused by this. Or in severe pain. Not sure.

Rockband in our dressing room! We never had time to actually play, but we did pretend to play…haha.

We went on a 3.5 hour walk with Cory in Sioux Falls, SD to find the falls. It was exhausting, but so fun! Also, it was our first time to South Dakota. Beautiful…and a great crowd!

Thanks for the Canada mittens! They are awesome!!

We decorated the bus with pictures from all of our travels over the years. Here is a picture of Kate in front of the pictures. She is wearing a scarf around her head…not sure why. Again, we have a lot of time to kill on the bus.

So that’s a little peak into our last few weeks. Hope you’ve been enjoying yours. St. Patty’s Day tomorrow…Wear green and catch some leprechauns!

Well well well…

March 5, 2012

If it isn’t Monday again. The weeks go by rather fast these days don’t they? For me they have been flying. I can’t believe it’s already March. Want to know what’s weird? As I was typing that, the Ellen show was on in the background and she said “I can’t believe it’s March…” It’s so crazy when stuff like that happens. I love it.

So I have these incredible friends back in Nashville who gave me the most awesome Christmas present ever. It’s a day planner with little notes/cards for every week that I am out on the road so that whenever I need a little pick-me-up from back home, I can open it up and read one of their cards. Seriously, best friends ever award. I’m so lucky.

Anyway, today’s card had a quote in it and you know how much I love quotes. So here it is:

“Rudeness is the weak person’s imitation of strength.”

I’ve never heard that one before, but it hit me pretty hard just now. It is pretty easy to get annoyed with little things and be rude especially out here on the road. It’s easy to lose perspective and for everything to become a much bigger deal than it actually is. It’s easy to become completely self-focused. Sometimes I just want to be complain and be rude and act like a two year old who needs a nap. But I have to remember to suck it up, be strong and act appropriately.

So there ya go. Jill’s thoughts for the day. Keep on truckin.

Sunrise Over The Falls…

March 5, 2012

Randomly woke up way too early while we were in Niagara Falls….opened the shades & saw the sun breaking through the clouds…

It was pretty cool. Except all that fast, rushing water scares me a little…so this time around this picture is about as close as we got to the falls 🙂

But let’s not forget the last time we were there…ummm…awhile ago…we got this close:

That’s right. We were CLOSE. So this time we stayed indoors and admired the falls from afar.

Good times in Canada…but more about that later 🙂

30 Things to STOP Doing to Yourself

March 2, 2012

A friend of ours sent us this blog article & we thought it was too good not to share. So click on the link & read away…..

We thought this one was especially great:

Stop wasting time explaining yourself to others.

Your friends don’t need it and your enemies won’t believe it anyway.  Just do what you know in your heart is right.
